Sometimes big challenges can be overcome with a simple solution. Betty found that out recently, thanks to NeighborLink Indianapolis.

Betty, age 80, is a homeowner of 55 years. Despite knee problems and arthritis in her hands, she gets around fairly well and lives independently. However, getting in and out of her vintage clawfoot bathtub was becoming difficult. The danger of falling was very real.

Betty explored the option of removing and replacing her tub with a walk-in. However, the estimate was a staggering $8,000. This is way beyond the means of a senior on a disability income.

Then a friend told Betty about NeighborLink Indianapolis. “They came up with a brilliant idea,” Betty recalls. NLI installed an extremely sturdy rail that enables her to access the tub without reaching across to an old gripper rail. They also changed the faucet, to make it easier to turn the water on and off.

Betty's experience illustrates the type of assistance that NLI provides to seniors. “It's a beautiful solution,” she exclaims. She was able to keep her tub, and avoided having a huge remodeling bill.

As we age, physical and mobility issues threaten our independence. NLI addresses the challenges of its homeowners with solutions that enable them to remain in their homes. Oftentimes, these solutions are simple, but the benefits to the homeowner are enormous.“I thank NeighborLink Indy for helping me and others,” she says.

Betty and her late husband Ezell raised their three daughters in their home. She has been blessed with 9 grandchildren and 16-great grandchildren. One corner of her living room is filled with photos, awards, and other memories from her extended family.

Although Betty lives alone, she has a brother living next door, and other family nearby. Her family ensures that she stays connected. When someone is not visiting Betty, you'll probably find her on the telephone with a loved one who is checking in.

Through the years, Betty has worked in a number of fields. She has been a nursing assistant, worked in a kosher food factory, driven a school bus, and done janitorial work. Betty is still able to drive, but limits it to short trips. “Thank God I can still get around,” she says.

She enjoys going to Municipal Gardens to play bingo and is always enthusiastic about attending Black Expo events. “I enjoy the music and the dancing,” she says. She keeps her mind sharp doing word puzzles.
