When Allen first heard about the BYPlus program, an eight-week training course that prepares people for a

career in construction, he was juggling two fast food jobs. Until he came across a post on his cousin’s social media of him on a ladder during training. Allen was intrigued and wanted to join.
But there was a catch. Neither of his employers were willing to adjust his schedule so he could attend classes during the day and work nights. Faced with a choice, Allen made a bold move: he quit both jobs. That decision last September set him on a path that would reshape his future in just a few short months.
From the very beginning, our team was impressed by Allen. His drive and determination stood out, and we began scouting him for our new Growth Program—which recruits up to two BYPlus graduates to provide opportunities for specialized training in areas like lead remediation, asbestos abatement, and weatherization. Andy Hoff, Director of the Growth Program, has nothing but praise for Allen.
"He’s motivated to learn—and he’ll keep working to see a project through. He’s great.”
Today, Allen works as a Growth Technician alongside Andy and a newly expanded team. Since joining the team in March, Allen hasn’t stopped learning. His first weatherization project, which he has been studying and preparing for since he started, is now just around the corner.

But for Allen, it’s about more than the work—it’s about the mission.
“To really try to help as many elderly or disabled people as we can - that’s the main goal. Make sure that someone can stay in their home without disruption. The mission, that’s what makes me feel good about the job.”
When asked where he sees himself in five years, his answer comes without hesitation: he wants to keep giving back. Whether as a technician or a volunteer, Allen plans to stay connected with Home Repairs for Good. His bigger dream is to help make living affordable again for people in his community.
In just a short time, Allen has accomplished so much. He’s gained valuable skills, started a career he loves, and is preparing for fatherhood. Even on the hardest days, his passion is clear:
“Even if I am in an attic, crouched down, sweating bullets, 100 degrees, body hurting—I still want to come in the next day and do it all over again.”
We are so proud to have Allen on our team, and we are excited to see all that lie ahead for him! Interested in joining the BYPlus program? You can learn more by visiting homerepairsforgood.org/byplus.
